Carbon monoxide is prevented, by a simple means, from being discharged into the air in a large amount above that in the emission standards just after combustion initiation. The combustion apparatus comprises a burner (1) which generates a gas through combustion, a heat-absorbing means (2) which absorbs the heat of the gas which has passed through this heat-absorbing means (2), a catalyst (4) with which at least carbon monoxide is oxidized, and a control means (8) which regulates combustion conditions in the burner (1) to first set conditions so that the concentration of carbon monoxide in the gas on the primary side of this catalyst (4) is a first set value. It is characterized in that the control means (8) controls combustion just after initiation of combustion in the burner (1) to inhibit carbon monoxide from being generated and/or discharged.
