PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus provided with a plurality of power saving states, capable of improving user satisfaction and user convenience concerning consumption of consumables and obtaining an effective power saving effect as well. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus with the plurality of power saving states has; index service life information which is made an index for an instruction for exchange of the consumables, information acquiring means for acquiring the actual service life information concerning the actual service life of the consumables, remaining service life acquiring means for deriving an index remaining service life which is the remaining service life for the consumable concerning the index and the actual service life which is the actual service life for the consumable from the acquired index service life information and the actual service life information, and transition judging means for determining the power saving state for making transition to based on the derived index remaining service life and actual remaining service life regarding the consumables provided in the image forming apparatus when conditions for making the transition are satisfied.
