An RFID assembly (30) includes an RFDD inlay (32), with an RFID tag (36), encapsulated within a plastic housing (34). The housing (34) has a peripheral array of flexible resilient fingers (46) for mounting the housing (34) within a pocket on a support structure, such as a pocket (48) on a mold core (50). The pocket (48) preferably is on an end of the mold core (50) so that the RFID assembly (30) preferably is disposed substantially beneath the end surface of the mold core (50). Plastic material, which preferably is the same plastic material as forms the plastic housing (34) in which the inlay (32) is contained, can be injected into a mold cavity (56) surrounding the mold core (50) and the assembly housing (34) without eroding the material of the housing (34).
