The hot gas machine (1) has a combustion chamber (6) connected with a fuel supply (5). A compressor (3) has a compression piston (2) for induction of air. An expansion piston (9) of the expansion unit (10) is kinematically coupled with the compression piston, which is connected with an outlet opening (12) for exhaust. A medium is provided for increasing a degree of efficiency. The combustion chamber has a high thermal capacity. An independent claim is included for a method for operating a hot gas machine.
