PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a time required for reproducing data after loading a disk on a loader. SOLUTION: In an optical disc reproducing apparatus, a loading mechanism 100 loads an optical disc 2 into the optical disc reproducing apparatus. During loading, a system controller 17 controls an optical pickup 6 to irradiate the optical disc 2 with laser light 5. When light reflected from the optical disc 2 is detected first, the system controller 17 determines the type of the optical disc 2 based on the amount of the reflected light.
