PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical switching material which can perform light emission and extinction with sufficiently high efficiency by photoirradiation, and can be manufactured by a simple process. SOLUTION: The optical switching material comprises a silica-based meso porous material having a luminescent organic group within a skeleton, and a photochromic substance arranged in at least one area of the inside of the skeleton of the silica-based meso porous material and the inside of the pore thereof.
