PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable efficient search and update of a database. SOLUTION: A database is provided. An index for the database is provided as a hierarchical structure of nodes that are navigated during a search until a conclusion set is reached, and the structure is organized such that key information relating to nodes is inferred from the position of the node in the structure. In a method of organizing the database, a key used to navigate an index is a composite key, and one or more of the keys in the composite key are represented in a compressed form.
