A portable electronic display device (200) has a relatively thin profile and includes a frame (208) with upper and lower covers (210, 212) connected to opposite sides of the frame (208). The upper cover has openings (224, 228) with outwardly extending peripheral flanges (230, 232) for accommodating the thicknesses of an electronic display (204) and a keypad (206). The lower cover (212) has a depression (240) that defines a cavity (242) into which a battery (244) or other power source is received for operating electronic circuitry (218) associated with the display (204). The combination of the peripheral flanges (230, 232) and depression (240) gives the appearance of a slim, streamlined display device (200).
