PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To diagnose the amount of slack in a drive chain and/or a handrail drive chain without requiring a precision electric motor control technique and an exclusive footstep movement sensor, in a passenger conveyor. SOLUTION: The passenger conveyer 1 is braked to stop after being unidirectionally operated by the electric motor 10, and braking of the passenger conveyor is released with electric power to the electric motor 10 shut off. At this time, a rotation detector 12 detects rotation amount of a driving shaft 7 that rotates, and the amount of slack in the drive chain 9 is calculated based on the rotation amount. Also, total delay time T4 from the start of the electric motor 10 in a reverse direction until a handrail displacement detector 24 detects the start of movement of a handrail 20 is determined, and a part L1 equivalent to the previously determined amount of slack in the drive chain 9 is subtracted from the total delay time T4, thereby calculating the amount of slack L2 in the handrail drive chain 23.
