PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for detecting substances containing a mercapto group and having high identifiability of substances containing a mercapto group such as methyl mercaptan and hydrogen sulfide and capable of highly sensitively detecting them. SOLUTION: The apparatus for detecting substances containing a mercapto group is constituted of a detection material 2 in which a phosphor formed in one surface of a prism 1 is immobilized by a polymer membrane containing an aprotic polar polymer, a light source 4 arranged in such a way as to irradiate exciting light 3 to the detection material 2, a photo-detection element 5 opposed to the detection material 2, an introduction pipe 7 for introducing a gas to be measured 6, an optical filter 9 arranged in the front surface of the photo-detection element 5 for detecting fluorescence 8 emitted from the detection material 2, a detection circuit 10 for processing output signals from the photo-detection element 5, and a data processing device 11 for processing signals from the detection circuit 10.
