PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily select recording media and reproducing units by providing an objective evaluation method when utilizing a PRML discriminating system. SOLUTION: The reproduction signal evaluation method includes: a sampling step of sampling the data obtained from the reflected laser beam at each clock timing to obtain sampled values, when irradiating the media with a laser beam via an objective lens and evaluating a reproduction signal for reproducing data obtained from the reflection light by the PRML discriminating system; and a step of, when a constraint length of a PR class in the PRML discriminating system is an even number, computing an intermediate sampled value for evaluation using at least adjacent two of the sampled values arranged in the order sampled at the clock timing.
