<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a user to play back broadcast contents in accordance with the contents even without operating the playback with a manual operation. <P>SOLUTION: A broadcast station 10 multiplexes and transmits program contents and associated information. The associated information contains playback control information of the program contents. A recording and playback apparatus 42 records received program contents and associated information on a recording medium 44. In playback, the recording and playback apparatus 42 extracts pause position and pause time information from the associated information and controls playback of the program contents. During a pause, an image/sound generating device 52 generates a timer image indicative of the remaining time. The timer image is displayed on PinP or one of double screens of a display device 38.
