<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a filter for a gas generator having the sufficient gas cooling effect, the slag capturing effect and the pressure adjusting performance, and the gas generator. <P>SOLUTION: The filter 100 for the gas generator comprises a first cylindrical filter layer 1, and a second cylindrical filter layer 2 provided on an outer circumference of the first filter layer 1 coaxially with the first filter layer 1. The first filter layer 1 and the second filter layer 2 are formed by winding one metallic wire. The density of the first filter layer 1 is 2.0×10<SP>-3</SP>to 4.0×10<SP>-3</SP>kg/cm<SP>3</SP>, and the density of the second filter layer 2 is 0.5×10<SP>-3</SP>to 3.0×10<SP>-3</SP>kg/cm<SP>3</SP>.
