PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an ingot which can obtain an ingot of high quality at an inexpensive production cost without using an expensive inert gas by an electroslag melting process. SOLUTION: Disclosed is a method for producing an ingot by an electroslag melting process characterized in that dry air is used as a seal gas for shielding the inside of a mold from an air atmosphere during the melting of an electrode composed of a stock for melting and further, Al is continuously added to slag in the mold from the start of the melting of the electrode to the completion of the melting. In the method for producing an ingot, as the dry air, air whose dew point temperature is controlled to≤-40°C is fed at a flow rate of 10 to 70 Nm<SP>3</SP>/h, and further, Al is added preferably in such a manner that, provided that melting velocity is defined as MR (kg/h) and the adding velocity of Al is defined as W (g/h), the adding velocity of Al satisfies the relation shown by 200≤W≤0.375×MR+512.5.
