PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of detecting pressure contact/separation and fixing loop quantity of a secondary transfer roller while suppressing increase in cost. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus comprises: a first detecting mechanism for detecting whether the transfer roller is in pressure contact or separated; a second detecting mechanism for detecting a loop quantity of paper in the vicinity of a transfer part; and a shared sensor used by both the first and second detecting mechanisms. The shared sensor is in an ON state when a large loop quantity is detected by the second detecting means during the pressure contact of the transfer roller, and is in an OFF state when a small loop quantity is detected. The shared sensor is in the ON state during the separation of the transfer roller regardless of the detection of loop quantity by the second detecting mechanism. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
