An intermediate device 134 resides logically between a content requestor and content available via the Internet. As responses to content requests from endpoint computers 110 are received from a content server 150, browser links are identified and are either modified, disabled or covered at the intermediate device 134. The intermediate device 134 also creates a browser link to a compound browser object(s) that is created and stored at the intermediate device 134. This created browser link invokes code at the intermediate device 134 to upload the compound browser object(s). The intermediate device 134 obtains these compound browser objects by obtaining content associated with the identified browser links, preferably either from a content server 150, a local cache or knowledge of its existence at the browser device 110. A modified markup language file is sent to the content requestor. Also disclosed is a method for determining the existence of a requested object within a user's endpoint cache. A cookie is added to the response to the request that represents the browser object, the cookie being used in subsequent requests and is parsed, and storing representative information regarding the browser object within the endpoint. |
