A system and a method for detecting and automatically recovering an in-service feeder optical cable fault are provided to shorten a fault recovery time and a maintenance cost by detecting a fault of an optical cable while providing an optical communication service. A fault detection unit(10) analyzes a light reflected from an operational trunk line optical cable(4). When a fault occurs the optical cable, the fault detection unit outputs a fault generation signal. An optical switch(20) is connected to the operational trunk line optical cable and a preliminary trunk line optical cable(6). The optical switch selectively connects the fault detection unit and an OLT(Optical Line Terminal)(2) to the operational trunk line optical cable or the preliminary trunk line optical cable according to the fault generation signal.
