The invention is for inspecting large objects such as cargo containers, especially those used in aviation which may be over 2 metres in length and width. It uses X-ray computer tomography (CT scanning) to detect contraband, drugs, explosives and weapons. The radiation source 6 and detector 17 are mounted on vertical column assemblies 8, 10 on opposite sides of the object being inspected and they are controlled to translate vertically in synchronism with each other. The object being inspected is also rotated on a turntable 11 during this process. The turntable may be a composite rotary conveying worktable. The lifting equipment may comprise a threaded arrangement or leading screw. |
