A device (300) is used for handling a tank (11) of an electrolysis cell for the production of aluminum by igneous electrolysis. The tank is rectangular and comprises a metal caisson (12) provided with a rim (14a, 14b) at least on its long sides (17a, 17b). The handling device incorporates at least one hooking mechanism (301, 301') destined to allow its prehension by a lifting and handling unit (20) and a frame (310) provided with a plurality of fixing devices (320) distributed in a manner to ensure the rigid fixing of the frame to the caisson at a plurality of predetermined points. Independent claims are also included for: (a) utilization of the handling device in a plant for the production of aluminum by igneous electrolysis; (b) a method for handling the tank of an electrolysis cell for the production of aluminum by igneous electrolysis.
