The method involves producing a bundled light beam (LS), where the light beam is directed to a surface of an article (PS) i.e. postal item. Reflection (R-1) of the light beam caused by the article is guided to a photosensor (5). The light beam is directed towards the article such that an angle (alpha) between the light beam and normals (Se) on the surface of the article is greater than zero results in a point (AP). A determination is made whether the article has a sub-area, which is covered by a foil (Fo). An independent claim is also included for a testing device for automatic testing of an article.
