The method involves propelling an axle by a rotary drive unit or by a linear drive unit. A torque (MF,MR) or a corresponding force is measured along a predetermined displacement path of the axle. The torque is effective on the drive unit. The torque and the force are measured in forward and backward direction. The energy containing moment and forces or friction dependent moment and forces are determined as direction dependent parameters by calculative overlapping of corresponding torque and force values. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a measuring and evaluation unit for determining a characteristic, particularly of a hanging propelled axle of a machine; (2) a controller for controlling and monitoring of a machine, particularly for a machine tool; and (3) a machine.
