A vapour compression system, such as a refrigerator, comprises: a compressor 1 for compressing a refrigerant, such as carbon dioxide, to a high pressure; a primary heat exchanger 3 for reclaiming and transferring heat from the refrigerant to another medium, such as a glycol stream 13; an air cooled gas cooler 4 for subsequently cooling the refrigerant whilst it is maintained at high pressure; an intermediate pressure control valve 9 for controlling the pressure of the refrigerant; and an intermediate pressure liquid receiver vessel 5 for collecting liquid refrigerant. The system also comprises an evaporator heat exchanger 7, preferably surrounding food and drink display cabinets, where the food and drink may be cooled below ambient temperature through the evaporation and subsequent superheating of the liquid refrigerant. A pre-heater 8 is provided for the refrigerant prior to it entering the compressor, where the pre-heater obtains heat from the refrigerant exiting the gas cooler, thereby enhancing the quality of the heat reclaimable by the primary heat exchanger at a correspondingly higher temperature. |
