The present invention relates to a corrosion inhibing coating for active corrosion protection of metal surfaces comprising a sandwich-like inhibitor complex and to methods for preparing the same. The sandwich-like complex of the corrosion inhibiting coating comprises a first inner layer of organic species, a corrosion inhibitor layer and a second outer layer of organic species. Said sandwich-like complex is sensitive to at least one stimulus, e.g. a pH change, and capable to release the corrosion inhibitor in response to said stimulus.
