The method involves positioning a low-pressure exhaust gas turbine (6) on downstream of a high-pressure exhaust gas turbine (7) in an exhaust system of an internal-combustion engine (1). An electronic control unit checks continuously or periodically at certain intervals whether transient or steady-state operating conditions of the engine prevail. A control valve (12) of a bypass line (16) in the gas turbine is controlled in accordance with a steady-state characteristic map in a steady-state case and a transient characteristic map or a transient function in a transient case.
