A METHOD OF SELECTING A REFERENCE PICTURE FOR PROCESSING A FIELD MACROBLOCK

A method of selecting a reference picture is provided to differently determine a reference picture index according to a coding mode of a macroblock, thereby usefully transferring reference picture information used in motion compensation. All reference pictures are regarded as a frame unit in picture or slice levels. The reference picture index of the frame unit is obtained. A controller arranges reference frames in the order reverse to a coding order. The controller assigns an index value while successively visiting the arranged reference frames. A reference picture index for a B frame is determined based on the display order of the reference frame. The controller assigns the other indexes in the reverse order to the reference frame having lower display order than the B frame.
