An optical signal image detecting apparatus and method are provided to prevent unnecessary optical signal image processing by detecting the optical signal image of data page only when the specific pattern is detected from the pattern detection area of the image detection area. An optical signal image detecting apparatus comprises a light receiving unit(110) sensing the optical signal image which enters an image detection area, a pattern processing unit(120) which receives the data, sensed in a pattern detection area set in the image detection area, from the light receiving unit in order to detect the specific pattern inserted in a data page and analyzes the sensed data and applies control signal when the specific pattern is detected, and a data processing unit(130) which receives the optical signal image of the data page from the light receiving unit and outputs as electric signal according to the control signal applied by the pattern processing unit.
