An antimicrobial composition. The antimicrobial composition includes a complex of an anionic polyester with a monomeric amidoamine a complex of an anionic polyester with a monomeric amidoamine or an organic cation, wherein the monomeric amidoamine comprises: <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?>(R1,2)N-R3-NH-CO-R4 <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?> wherein: R1-H, Alkyl, Aryl, HO-(CH2CH2-O-)n-, MeO-(CH2CH2-O-)n-, HO-(CH2)n-; R2-H, Alkyl, Aryl, HO-(CH2CH2-O-)n-, MeO-(CH2CH2-O-)n-, HO-(CH2)n-; R3=Alkyl, Aryl, -(CH2CH2-O-)-(CH2-)n; R4=Alkyl, Aryl, -(CH2CH2-O-)-(CH2-)n-CH3, -O-CH3, -O-C2H5, -O-C3H7; and n=1-30; and wherein the organic cation comprises: wherein: R1-H, Alkyl, Aryl, HO-(CH2CH2-O-)n-, MeO-(CH2CH2-O-)n-, HO-(CH2)n-; R2-H, Alkyl, Aryl, HO-(CH2CH2-O-)n-, MeO-(CH2CH2-O-)n, HO-(CH2)n-; R3-H, Alkyl, Aryl, -(CH2CH2-O-)-(CH2-)n; R4,5-H, Alkyl, Aryl, -(CH2CH2-O-)-(CH2-)n-CH3, -O-CH3, -O-C2H5, -O-C3H7; and n=1-30; and the anionic polyester is selected from the group consisting of an anionic polyester having at least one carboxylic group, a sulfonic acid polymer, and a phosphoric acid polymer. A medical device having an antimicrobial composition that includes a complex of an anionic polyester with a monomeric amidoamine having at least one amide group and at least one amine group, wherein the amine group is either a primary amine, or a secondary amine, or a tertiary amine, or a quaternary amine, or a combination thereof and the anionic polyester has at least one carboxylic group is also provided.
