PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an authentication device for rejecting authentication processing when a predetermined number of failures continuously occur in authentication. SOLUTION: The authentication device for identifying a user of the authentication device is provided with: an authentication determining part 102 for determining the success or failure of authentication; a first state storing part 103 for storing first state information that depends upon the number of authentication failures; a second state storing part 104 for storing second state information that depends upon the umber of authentication failures; a first state updating part 105 for updating the first state when the authentication determining part fails in authentication; a second state updating part 105 for updating the second state on the basis of the first state when the authentication determining part succeeds in authentication; a state determining part 107 for determining whether the failures continuously occur in authentication the prescribed number of times or below on the basis of the first state and the second state; and a control part 108 for controlling authentication processing or the like on the basis of the results of the authentication determining part and the state determining part.
