PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a saponified cellulose ester film that can be formed into a durable coating without being subjected to a severe means such as addition of an excessive amount of a crosslinking agent, heat acceleration and increasing of the amount of ionizing radiation, and an optical film provided with the same.

SOLUTION: A cellulose ester film 10 is saponified with an aqueous alkaline solution 12 containing at least water, an organic solvent and an alkaline agent by applying the aqueous alkaline solution 12 to the cellulose ester film 10 to obtain a saponified cellulose ester film 10' having a plasticizer on a surface layer of a saponified face in an amount of 0.25 or less measured by an ATR/IR method.
