PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a telephone system improving usability of a telephone directory function. SOLUTION: Focusing on the fact that telephone directory data of all users are stored in a system server 3, it has been made possible to obtain the telephone directory data corresponding to an extension number from the other IP telephone set by designating the extension number. Namely, the extension number of a distant party as an object of reference is inputted when the function is activated by depressing a "other party telephone directory button" and a request message including this extension number is sent to the system server 3. The system server 3 returns the telephone directory data corresponding to this extension number to the IP telephone set of the request source. In this case, a password of a requesting party (user) is input from the IP telephone set and the system server 3 in turn judges acknowledgment or non-acknowledgment of transmission of the telephone directory data by authenticating such password.
