PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a signal converter capable of obtaining a smooth interpolation image while suppressing a circuit size and power consumption, and to provide a signal conversion method for the signal converter. SOLUTION: A signal converter has: a line memory 2a for storing pixel data on a first scanning line; a line memory 2b for storing pixel data on a second scanning line of one horizontal synchronization period before; a means 4 for detecting the difference between lines for determining whether the differential value of the pixel data positioned in the same row on both the scanning lines is not less than a first threshold; means 5a, 5b for detecting difference within lines for determining whether the differential value of adjacent pixel data is not less than a second threshold for each of the first and second scanning lines; an interpolation processing determination means 6 for determining an interpolation method for each pixel, based on a result determined by the means 4 for detecting the difference between lines and the means 5a, 5b for detecting difference within lines; and an interpolation pixel data generation means 7 for reading the pixel data stored in the line memories 2a, 2b and for generating interpolation pixel data based on the interpolation method determined by the interpolation processing determination means 6.
