PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a disk device array system and an update method that allows execution of updating of HDD-control firmware, without having to stop stopping the disk device array system. SOLUTION: This disk device array system has a firmware update control part functioning, when a firmware update instruction is received in a disk device from a previously differently equipped console for maintenance, and designating the disk device of an update target, based on contents of the firmware update instruction; and a degeneration state setting control part temporarily cutting off the disk device designated by the firmware update control part from a host computer, and setting it to a temporary degeneration state. The firmware update control part has a firmware update control function for updating the firmware of the disk device set to the temporary degeneration state by the degeneration state setting control part to an updating firmware prepared in advance.
