<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric power steering device avoiding a danger making steering assistance impossible owing to adhesion of foreign matters to a switch. <P>SOLUTION: In this electric power steering device, a motor 5 for steering assistance is switched to a driving ready state/driving impossible state by turning ON/OFF a relay contact 21a in a relay 21 provided between the motor 5 and an on-vehicle battery 90. When the relay contact 21a is ON, both-end voltage of the relay contact 21a is detected by a voltmeter 22. Current flowing in the relay contact 21a is detected by an ammeter 23.
