PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element capable of restraining color mixture and nonuniformity of an organic EL light emitting material solution applied to adjacent light emitting regions, in organic EL light emitting material film formation. SOLUTION: This organic EL element 90 includes: pixel electrodes 20 formed on a substrate 10; an insulation film layer 40 having openings in light emitting regions 30, and formed on the pixel electrodes 20; a hole transport layer 50 formed in the light emitting regions 30 on the pixel electrodes 20 and regions on the insulation film layer 40 surrounding at least the light emitting regions 30, and having liquid repellency; an organic EL light emitting layer 60 formed in the light emitting regions 30 on the hole transport layer 50; and a counter electrode 70 formed on the organic EL light emitting layer 60.
