PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-based aldehyde scavenger which maintains an excellent aldehyde scavenging effect over a long period and a building material in which the release of the aldehyde is suppressed. SOLUTION: The aldehyde scavenger comprising a water-based composition containing a polyamide amine, a bisulfite and urea is deposited on the building material in a quantity of 0.05-10 g/m<SP>2</SP>solid portion on the surface area of the building material obtained by sticking a binder comprising an aldehyde condensing thermosetting resin as main component and forming and hardening.
