The amount of scale deposited on the inner surfaces of water pipes in any of various boilers including steam boilers, hot-water boilers, waste heat boilers, and exhaust gas boilers is accurately known by installing a temperature sensor at an appropriate position of the boiler. An inner water pipe row (7) and an outer water pipe row (8) are constructed from water pipes (5, 6) for connecting an upper header (3) and a lower header (4) to each other. The gap between adjacent inner water pipes (5, 5) is closed by an inner vertical fin (9) except for the lower end of the inner water pipe row (7). The gap between adjacent outer water pipes (6, 6) is closed by an outer vertical fin (11) except for the upper end of the outer water pipe row (8). Upper outer lateral fins (17) are arranged in a vertical relationship on that surface of the outer water pipe row (8) which forms the inner peripheral surface of the row, where the surface is in a set area that extends upward from a vertical intermediate part of each outer water pipe (6).The temperature sensor (29) is installed in the outer water pipe (6) at its position corresponding to the lower end of the set area. The state of the deposition of scale is known by the temperature detected by the temperature sensor (29).
