<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify the development, design and deployment of a digital pen system. <P>SOLUTION: In the digital pen system, position data are electronically recorded by operating digital pens on position-coded products. The digital pen system utilizes an electronic document file, to represent each position-coded product. This file includes the indication of a plurality of copies of the product, a set of document pages for each copy, at least one pattern license specifying a set of pattern pages (with each pattern page being a unique part of a position-coding pattern), and metadata indicating the sequence of the pattern pages.
