<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a (S)-(+)-3-(aminomethyl)-5-methylhexate (pregabalin) or its salts by asymmetric hydrogenation synthesis, and intermediates useful for the manufacturing of pregabalin. <P>SOLUTION: This is a method of manufacturing a compound represented by formula (1) (wherein R1 is an alkyl group) by asymmetric catalytic reduction of an alkene represented by formula (2) in the presence of a chiral catalyst.
