PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing metallic iron which allows to improve the operating ratio and the maintenance of the furnace hearth and is suitable to the long term continuous operation by constituting so as to easily remove and restore even when this metallic iron powder is buried into the furnace hearth surface or the wetting or the corrosion with slag is suffered in the production of the metallic iron, wherein the mixture containing carbonaceous reducing agent and iron oxide, is supplied onto the furnace hearth of a moving floor type reduction-melting furnace, and heated, and after reduction-melting the iron oxide, the obtained metallic iron is cooled and then discharged to the outside of the furnace and recovered. SOLUTION: Before supplying the mixture, a renewable renew furnace hearth 9 is formed by spreading the furnace hearth material on the furnace hearth 8, and the metallic iron Fe is produced while renewing a part or the whole of this renew furnace hearth 9a deteriorated during operating.
