PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element which prevents external light reflection caused in a contact hole of a lower electrode without increasing manufacturing processes to obtain excellent emission characteristics of high contrast. SOLUTION: The top emission type organic EL element is so configured that the aspect ratio (α) of the contact hole formed in a flattening film isα<2. A transparent conductive oxide film consisting principally of indium oxide is used as the lower electrode, and comes into contact with a thin film transistor in the contact hole. A bottom surface of the contact hole is parallel to a substrate surface, and the angle (θ) of a surface of the transparent conductive oxide film at the bottom portion of the contact hole to a surface of the transparent conductive oxide film at a side surface portion of the contact hole isθ≈90°.
