PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element showing high luminous efficiency and durability. SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescent element has at least one organic layer including a luminescent layer between a pair of electrodes, wherein: a layer containing a carbene compound is formed between the luminescent layer and an anode; the luminescent layer contains at least one of electron transporting material and at least one of hole transporting material; at least one of the electron transporting material and hole transporting material is a luminescent material; and the concentration of the electron transporting material of the luminescent layer decreases from a cathode side to the anode side.
