The method involves detecting spiral coil current flowing through a heating coil by closed loop control of spiral coil current. Spiral coil voltage (U-W) is measured directly or indirectly. The measured coil voltage or calculated resistance of the spiral coil is compared with standard values, which are filed in a table for lamps for determining the lamp type after calculating spiral coil resistance (R-W). The operating parameters for the detected lamp are detected. An independent claim is also included for an electronic ballast comprising a memory unit.
