A lock state indicator and method for a lock having as associated key, the lock state indicator including a key head (14,24,64), a lock state indicator element (18,26,40,66) coupled to the key head (14,24,64), and an element (18,26,40,66) coupled to the lock state indicator element for automatically causing the lock state indicator element (18,26,40,66) to indicate a changed state of the lock, the lock state indicator element (18,26,40,66) being capable of indicating a changed state only upon actual physical change of state of the lock.
