<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrodynamic brake device capable of performing effective braking in safety. <P>SOLUTION: The electrodynamic braking device for an electrically tractive vehicle is equipped, for the purpose of improving a force-to-velocity characteristics of the vehicle, with an electromechanical machine 10 having electric terminals 13, 14, 15, at least one coil, and a permanent magnet; a resistive and electric braking torque generator 26; and a commutator 20 capable of selectively connecting the electric terminals 13, 14, 15 of the electromechanical machine 10 to the braking torque generator 26.
