PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide synthesis of variousα-ωsubstituted soluble derivatives of sexithiophene suitable for solvent casting, and having very large solubility to a common organic solvent; and their use as the semiconducting channels in organic thin-film field-effect transistors. SOLUTION: Soluble derivatives of sexithiophene in which terminal carbons are substituted with various polar groups are synthesized; and the various polar groups are phosphonic esters, phosphonic acids, phosphonates, carboxylic acids, carboxylates, amines, amides, carbamates, and alcohols, each separated from the terminal thiophene rings by C1-10 methylene groups. Coatings of the derivatives of sexithiophene are each used as a semiconductor constituent. These organic semiconductors are dissolved in common organic solvents and applied to the surface of a substrate in inexpensive, low-temperature solution processing such as spin-coating, dip-coating, drop-casting, or microcontact printing.
