PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector capable of easily changing the luminance of a light source, and a control method thereof. SOLUTION: When the power supply of the projector 1 is turned ON, a user can display an input image at a desired luminance by sliding an operation knob to set a lens cover to a first open position or a second open position. The user can set an image mute state in which the display of the input image is stopped by setting the lens cover to a closing-directional position over the first open position. In the ON state, a control part 20 periodically monitors a detection result from a cover detection part 31. When the lens cover is moved by the user's operation, and the detection result of the cover detection part 31 is changed in accordance therewith, the control part 20 changes the luminance of the light source 11 or the display state of the image based on the position of the lens cover.
