PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-cost membrane filtration apparatus and a membrane damage sensing method for it which can surely sense membrane damage by improving leakage sensitivity. SOLUTION: After a filtration mode, a membrane damage sensing mode is provided which performs a peeling-off process for a set time period where a control system 34 stops a supply of raw water from a raw water supply device 2, and an air supply device 5 supplies air to a raw water chamber to discharge the raw water into a discharge pipe 9 connected to the raw water chamber, peeling off suspended matters to obtain high turbidity water, and then performs a permeation detection process where air discharge is stopped by closing a switching valve 15 to generate a permeate, and the presence of the damage of a membrane module 1 is judged from a value of a state of suspended matters in the permeate detected by a suspended matter detection device 19.
