The unit has a drive unit for driving a transmission, where an angular value and an angular speed are assigned to an additional steering angle as physical values. The physical values are changed in dependence of an actual or expected performance requirement of the overlapping unit, where the physical values are assigned to the additional steering angle. The physical value to be changed of the additional steering angle is the angular value, where the drive unit is designed as an actuator, and a number of revolutions of the actuator is limitable to the overlapping unit. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a steering device of a motor vehicle (2) a method for operating an overlapping unit for a power assisted steering device of a motor vehicle.
