517,647. Moulding battery electrodes. HALL, A. A. Aug. 4, 1938, No. 23099. [Class 87 (ii)] Relates to a machine for applying a layer of depolariser to a carbon-coated zinc plate. The depolariser powder is fed from a hopper 8 by a reciprocating plunger 17 operated through give-way mechanism so that the length of stroke of the plunger increases as the powder beneath it diminishes. Where the length of stroke is sufficiently long, a solenoid 26 is energized and allows a pawl to partially rotate the hopper. The hopper has a series of openings, all of which, except the one beneath the plunger, is masked by a plate 42. The zinc plates are fed in grooves 61 beneath a plate 45 and complete a circuit to energize an electromagnet to move a previously inserted plate upwardly into a recess in the plate 45, and to cause the plate 45 to be rotated one space by pawl and ratchet mechanism. A cam-operated lever 67 moves an anvil beneath the zinc plate under the plunger 17, a knife severs the layer of powder on the plate from the compressed powder above it, and an ejector plunger forces the finished electrode downwardly through an aperture in the plate 45. |
