PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a synthetic method by which an aryl-substituted bipyridinium compound can be synthesized in a short time under mild reaction conditions by a clean method. SOLUTION: Provided is a method for producing the bipyridinium compound represented by general formula (A) [wherein, Ar1and Ar2are each independently a (hetero)aryl group which may have a substituent; R3and R4are each independently a substituent which may form a ring together with a substituted pyridine ring; m3 and m4 are each independently an integer in a range of 0 to 4; when m3 and m4 are each an integer in a range of 2 to 4, R3groups and R4groups may be identical or different each other; X is a halogen atom or RSO3(R is an aryl group or alkyl group which may have a substituent)].
